Facere will be part of this year’s Science Festival in the Forum Groningen: Eureka! On 25 September, Hylke and Friederike will present their research for the Groningen public.
Visitors can explore “The mysterious drinking cup of old Nestor” – a call to join our collective imagination in the wake of a real ancient scholarly debate. This hands-on activity is rooted in Friederike’s research on the appreciation of craftsmen collaborating with famous scholars, as presented by Athenaeus of Naucratis. We encourage visitors to shape their vision of Nestor’s cup, a mysterious object from the Iliad. A small selection of craft media, visual and textual inspiration from antiquity and our team will be there to engage the guests of the Science Festival with the world of ancient cup making.
At 20:00 Hylke will give a short lecture (in Dutch) on the relationship between humans and nature in Roman literature, titled ‘Zou Plinius zich vastlijmen aan de A12?’. Drawing on Pliny the Elder’s Encyclopaedia, he explains some of the ways in which Romans discussed the impact of humans on the earth.
